Metering Programme
Our ambitious programme to upgrade and install water meters across Wales and parts of England has launched and will help our customers save water in their homes.
What's here
We’re upgrading water meters across Wales and parts of England
As part of our commitment to improving water services and protecting this vital resource, we’ve launched an ambitious programme to upgrade and install water meters across Wales and parts of England. This initiative began in April 2025 and is designed to help customers better understand their water usage, while enabling us to detect and reduce leakage more effectively.
No action required – No change to your bill
You don’t need to do anything, and this work will not affect the way you are charged.
We want to reassure all our customers that your current billing method will remain the same:
- You don’t need to do anything, and this work will not affect the way you are charged.
- If you are not currently billed through a water meter, this will continue unchanged.
- If you are already billed on a water meter, your billing will remain as it is.
Your existing payment setup will stay in place, and no action is required from you.
If you’re billed on HelpU or WaterSure Wales, this will remain the same.
Why we're installing meters
Water is one of our most precious resources. With increasing demand driven by population growth and the effects of climate change, it’s more important than ever to manage it wisely. By installing and upgrading meters, we can:
- Monitor and reduce leakage more effectively across our network.
- Ensure a more reliable water supply for future generations.
- Support customers in using water more efficiently at home.
How a meter can help you
Even if your billing won’t change, having a water meter offers several benefits:
- Save water, save money – Track your usage and, if you choose to switch to metered billing, you may reduce your water bill.
- Detect leaks early – Meters help identify leaks quickly, so they can be fixed before becoming costly problems.
- Protect the environment – Using water more efficiently helps lower carbon emissions and supports a more sustainable future.
What to expect during installation
We’ll install or upgrade your water meter on our pipework outside your home. This is usually a quick and straightforward process with minimal disruption.
The meter, the connecting pipework, and the stop tap are all owned and maintained by Welsh Water. We have the right to install meters for leakage monitoring, and to access them when necessary.
Where we're working
We’re working in a growing number of communities across South Wales. As soon as we’re ready to visit your area, we’ll write to you with all the details.
