Frequently asked questions
Boil notice came in effect at 5:00am on Sunday, 24th November.
As you know we have had significant rainfall over the last week, in fact the weather gauge at Tynywaun measured the second highest rainfall in the UK last Saturday and Sunday. This resulted in a significant amount of flooding on site at Tynywaun Water Treatment Works and surface water running from the hill onto the drinking water storage tank and impacting the tank. This is why we immediately issued a precautionary boil water notice while we do work to protect the tank.
We are facing a number of challenges as we try to complete this despite working 24/7.
First of all, some of the work to prevent damage from future flooding involves installing waterproof membranes around the storage tank. To do this successfully, we need a period of dry weather. The intermittent rainfall this week has, as you will have experienced locally, slowed our efforts to do this and there remains a risk of intermittent rain over the next few days. We also need to lay these membranes on the roof of the tanks, and to do this safely, we are limited in terms of the weight of machinery we can use while we work to achieve this.
The safety of our teams is also a priority which means that we need to take extra time to work carefully for this part of the essential works.
We have extend the ‘boil water notice’ by up to one week. The original notice started on Sunday 24th November and so we are asking customers to continue boiling their drinking water for another 7 days (until Sunday, 8th December).
To recognise this extended inconvenience, a further payment of £100 will be made to all affected households. This is on top of the original £150 payment issued to household customers. For businesses, we will make an extra payment of £200. This is in addition the £300 payment issued to businesses together with our scheme for contributing towards certain costs/loss of gross profit.
Only customers who received a text message directly from Welsh Water to a mobile or landline linked to the registered account, or a Welsh Water leaflet delivered in the post notifying them of the precautionary ‘boil water’ notice, will be eligible for the compensation.
We will cross reference any claim for compensation against our records of the communications that were issued to households.
Use boiled tap water for: - drinking (including water provided for domestic pets) - making ice cubes - preparing food (such as washing salads and fruit, where food will not be cooked) - brushing teeth - rinsing crockery, utensils and food preparation equipment after washing up by hand - preparation of infant formula i.e. any purpose where the water may be ingested.
Use water as normal for: - washing, showering and bathing (ensure young children do not swallow water) - toilet flushing - washing machines - dishwashers (on a hot wash cycle) i.e. any purpose where the water will NOT be ingested For hand-washing, ensure hands are washed with soap and are thoroughly dried on a clean towel or paper towel.
It is sufficient to bring water to the boil and then allow it to cool – prolonged boiling is not necessary. Using an electric kettle is fine.
Boiled water should be kept in a clean container in a fridge for no more than 24 hours.
No. You should never prepare drinks or food for consumption using water from a hot tap. Hot water can be used as normal for bathing, washing, laundry and dishwashing as above.
Our water system is not designed in the postcode format therefore neighbours can have different water supplies.
No. Domestic water filters should not be relied upon to purify the water. To avoid any potential contamination of your filter, we actually recommend that you do not use the filter whilst the boil water notice is in place or replace the filter once the notice is lifted since the filter may concentrate any potential contamination.
No. We do not recommend water purification tablets as an alternative to boiling.
No. We recommend that drinks vending machines are turned off. When the water supplies are back to normal, the machine should be cleaned and any filters replaced.
The same general advice applies as for domestic customers in that all water for drinking and food preparation should be brought to the boil and cooled as necessary.
